Airport Operations Intern
General Statement of Job
Under the authority of the Airfield Manager, monitors the
day-to-day airfield operations, conducts airfield inspections to
identify, assess, and mitigate hazardous conditions; inspects the
condition of airfield lighting, pavement, and markings.
Coordinates airfield maintenance, repair and construction; and
building maintenance projects. Utilizes the Lock Out Tag Out
(L.O.T.O) program for operational safety.
Coordinates and oversees the City of Kissimmee and Airport rules
and policies to provide the basis for safe, orderly, and efficient
airfield operations.
Essential Functions:
Ensures airport compliance with all Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) regulations
and advisory documents that govern airport safety and security.
Acts as a liaison between different parties involved in airport
operations and projects.
Conducts Airfield inspections; responsible for the inspection of
lighting systems on runways and taxiways, runways for FOD,
perimeter fencing, ramps, gates, facilities, and animal control and
dispersal; performs operator level vehicle maintenance and
coordinates with City Garage; responsible for property
inventory.
Documents airport inspections and activities utilizing a variety of
data management systems.
Issues Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs).
Works closely with the local air traffic control tower, fixed based
operators, flight and mechanic schools, tenants and City
departments in the development and implementation of programs and
procedures that ensure safe, orderly and efficient airport
operations.
Operate two-way radios, facilitate non-emergency communications,
and operate vehicles on and off the airfield.
Coordinates Airfield Maintenance, repair, and construction;
coordinates removal of disabled aircraft from active runways.
Performs general administrative work; creates Incident Reports and
Daily Incident Report logs.
Conducts training of airfield driver's training and emergency
response procedures for airport tenants and City/County
Departments.
Performs wildlife control to include removal and disposal; performs
security inspections; performs safety inspections of fire
extinguishers and fire hydrants.
Responsible for project coordination.
Receives and responds to complaints and inquiries.
Responds to airport or aircraft emergencies; maintains the Airport
Emergency Plan and monitors current and future weather
conditions.
Required to be on-call and able to report to the airport after
normal business hours in the event of an airport/aircraft emergency
or security related event.
Manage or implement airport programs, projects and tasks
assigned.
Operate personal computers utilizing word processing, spreadsheets
and software applications.
Perform airport office management and financial administration
duties.
Perform other duties as assigned including airfield maintenance
duties.
Minimum Education and Training
Requires a minimum of an Associate degree in airport or aviation
management, preferably supplemented by two (2) years of experience
in airport/aviation operations, or an equivalent combination of
education, training and experience that provides the required
knowledge, skills and abilities. Preferably holds a pilot's
certificate and AAAE CM designation or A.C.E. certification. Must
possess and maintain a valid state of Florida driver's license.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Skill Requirements:
Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of
the City Airport as they pertain to the performance of duties of
the Airport Operations Coordinator. Is knowledgeable in the laws,
ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific
duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the
areas of aviation, airport operations and maintenance, public
relations, engineering/construction, etc.
Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to take the
initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need
of direct supervision. Has the ability to learn and utilize new
skills and information to improve job performance and
efficiency.
Is able to read and interpret complex materials pertaining to the
responsibilities of the job. Is able to assemble and analyze
information and make written reports and records in a concise,
clear and effective manner. Has comprehensive knowledge of the
terminology used within the department.
Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of
other departments, professionals and members of the public through
contact and cooperation. Knows how to make public presentations.
Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary,
spelling and basic mathematics. Has thorough knowledge of modern
office practices and technology. Has knowledge of and skill in the
use of computers for data and word processing. Has knowledge of
applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions. Knows how
to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations and
confrontational situations.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a vehicle and a variety of
machines and equipment including a computer, calculator, motor
vehicle, etc. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force
occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or
constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve
walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift
and/or carry weights of up to fifty pounds.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of assigned tasks.
Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and
responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct
any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.
Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal
and external entities with whom the position interacts. Assumes
responsibility for completing assigned work.
Completes assigned work within deadlines in accordance with
directives, policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Maintains
accountability for assigned responsibilities in the technical,
human and conceptual areas.
Working Conditions:
Works indoors or outdoors in all types of weather. Also works in
roadways where vehicle traffic hazards exist. Must be able and
willing to work up to a 10-hour shift, early mornings, late
evenings, holidays, weekends and available during hurricane season
responses.
Other:
It is understood that every incidental duty connected with
operations enumerated in the job description is not always
specifically described, and employees, at the discretion of the
City, may be required to perform duties not within their job
descriptions.
